HWY-026: Wriggle Out the Restless by This is the Kit (CD version)
This Is The Kit is the musical project of Kate Stables and whoever joins her. Born in England, based in Paris, Kate's project has received newfound prominence when it was announced as the opener for The National's entire autumn 2013 tour of Europe and the United Kingdom. Previously they had established themselves as musician's musicians performing as hand-picked openers for artists such as Iron & Wine, Sharon van Etten, Alexi Murdoch and Herman Dune, artists with a similar independent streak and warm-hearted approach to creating modern yet timeless music.
What do they sound like? Well, you thought you didn't like the banjo but you were wrong pal. Listen as Kate rips forward with her hypnotic twang pattern and a voice of rare, unaffected beauty.
"Absolutely gorgeous, like an aural bath with the warm water lapping over you" -- Cerys Matthews, BBC 6music
"The aim was to have fun playing with people whose work I really like," says Kate. "The more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn."
Kate sings, plays guitar, banjo, trumpet and percussion, while a cast of carefully hand-plucked friends deliver guitar strums, banjo plucks, hushed horns and electronic textures that sit beneath Stables’ easy, earnest lilt. Her long time collaborator and regular live companion Jesse Vernon produced the album and contributes guitars, percussion, violin and percussion. Other credits include Jim Barr on bass, Francois Marry on organ, trumpet and piano and Rozi Plain on guitar, banjo and clarinet. Gestated over a long period the album draws on This Is The Kit's many musical friends to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound.
